  5. This preliminary version package contains:

  7.  x FBBS v0.921
  8.  x Change UserFile 0.8 -> 0.9
  9.  x FBBS v0.92 Manual (in MSWord 3.0 format)

  11. If you were running FBBS v0.83 or earlier, you must change the format
  12. of the UserFile with "Change UserFile 0.8 -> 0.9".  Place the application
  13. in the same folder as FBBS and launch "Change UserFile 0.8 -> 0.9."  It will
  14. take the old user file from "FBBS Files" folder and convert it to the new
  15. format.  It will create a file called "UserFile 0.8x", which is a copy of
  16. the old user file.
  17.  
  18. FBBS will create a folder called "FBBS Files" and all the menues and text
  19. files it needs, with its default contents, the first time the program is ran
  20. (provided that "FBBS Files" doesn't already exist).  If you are upgrading from
  21. an older version of FBBS, please make sure you have all the text files FBBS
  22. needs by checking Appendix E of the manual.

  24. The manual is provided in MSWord format.  Just as FBBS, the manual is a
  25. pre-release.  Effort has been made to ensure it's readable, clear and has
  26. few errors and inconsistencies.

  30. Software and Hardware requirements:
  31.  
  32. FBBS Requires at least 128K ROMs (i.e. Mac 512Ke or newer).  A hard disk
  33. and 1Meg of memory are strongly recommended, but not absulutely necessary.
  34. FBBS is MultiFinder friendly, and it prefers System version 4.1 or newer.
  35.  
  36. NOTE - FBBS used to need system v6.0.3 or newer when running with Tabby
  37. in order to post a mail event.  Now it can do it even with system v4.1.
  38.  
  39. FBBS is 100% MultiFinder friendly.  It will run transparently in the background.  
  40.  
  41. Be aware that if you use "processor intensive" or "disk intensive" programs
  42. as you run FBBS, these may have an effect upon FBBS's speed, because they take over the computer for much longer than they should.

  48.  x  Deleted echo boards weren't ignored when importing messages.

  50.  x  FBBS now waits for modem response.  It makes 3 attempts per command,
  51. timing out after 5 seconds.

  57.  x  Tabby functions can be customized:
  58.         - Tabby may be turned on and off
  59.         - NETmail can be always private or always public (Tabby doesn't sup-

  62.         - You can set whether to accept Crashmail.
  63.         - "Name Replacing" is now optional.  If it's on, real names will be re-
  64.            placed with usernames, but message processing will be slower.
  65.         - "Sysop" in a message header should/shouldn't be replaced with the
  66.            sysop's username (no effect over processing speed here).
  67.         - You can set how long to wait for a TSYNCH (rec. 10-15 sec.)
  68.         - A line in the Tabby Preferences dialog indicates how many minutes
  69.            before the next Mail Event.

  103. Please tell me what machine you're using, what system and finder versions,
  104. and multifinder, if present.  Tell me what you suspect the problem to be, 
  105. if it occurs consistently, etc.  Make sure to mention if any INIT's or 
  106. plug-in cards were present and running at that time, and anything else you 
  107. may consider of significance.

  113. x You can use an alternate menu for mesg. bases.  Just enter the name of
  114. the menu file you want to use, which MUST be in "FBBS Files" folder.  The
  115. default menu is still "Mesg Menu".

  117. x Quite a few glitches in interfacing with Tabby have been fixed.  The Tabby
  118. interface section is virtually completed.

  120. x Changed UserFile structure to include a "Messages Waiting" field, to make
  121. the search for new messages as fast as displaying the boards where there
  122. are messages waiting!

  133. Bug Fixes:
  134.  
  135. x FBBS user search would crash when having more than 100 users, due to heavy
  136. use of recursion and running out of stack space.  Recursion has been elimina-
  137. ted, and that will keep the stack from running into the heap causing very
  138. nasty problems.
  139.  
  140. x v0.81 was case sensitive with message header names.  Therefore, "JOHN" and
  141. "John" would be two different things.  (This would only happen with echomail
  142. and netmail messages).  This version doesn't care about case.
  143.  
  144. x Some fixes in creation of new boards:  User flags are now updated correctly.
  145.  
  146. x Due to a little "inconsistency" in the Macintosh Time Manager, Scheduled
  147. Tabby events couldn't be executed.  You will need System 6.0.3 or newer to
  148. be able to execute TabbyNet scheduled events.

  152. x "Scan messages for you" got replaced by a "Scan Token" function.  You can
  153. scan messages wich contain a certain string in their header.

  155. x Echomail messages are marked "Deleted" as they're processed.

  157. x Messages get saved much faster (esp. on larger bases).

  159. x Forced HangUp:  You can now hang up on a user in three different ways:
  160. "Out of Time" will tell the user that the time is out; "No Message" will
  161. simply hang up, with no explanation, and my favorite one, "Send Noise", will
  162. send 10 seconds of noise before hanging up.

  164. x Real Name Posting:  When this flag is set in a message board, messages
  165. will be posted with the user's real name, rather than the "Username"), which
  166. may be just a handle.  This is especially useful in many national fidonet
  167. conferences where handles are discouraged.
  168.  
  169. x Trashcan:  A file which contains handles, real names, and/or phone numbers
  170. of "undesirables" was added.  It's called "Trashcan".  "Trashcan Message"
  171. contains a message to be displayed to those undesirables.  The syntax used
  172. is explained inside the Trashcan file.

  179. x There was a little wrap around bug (well, not really a bug) that would
  180. wrap the last word typed if the character entered in the 80th column
  181. was a space.  Now it just goes to the next line.

  185.  x  Message quoting.  You can include text from the message you're replying
  186. to in your messages.

  188.  x  Replaced some menu items by icons, added indicators:

  190.  x  Clicking on the "User Name" will bring up a window with information
  191. about the user.  This is much faster than pulling it from the UserEdit 
  192. function.

  194.  x  The "Req." box, when hilighted, indicates that the user requested chat
  195. with the sysop.

  197.  x  Clicking on the "Chat On" box will put the sysop in chat mode.

  212.  x Message importing (when using Tabby) and saving were sped up quite
  213. a bit.

  215.  x  Message bases will be updated after the user logs off.  This makes
  216. saving messages and changing message boards much faster!

  218.  x  Message numbers will be updated once a day, so that in all bases they
  219. begin at 1 and go up in sequence.

  221.  x  Tabby events will be delayed during local mode, chat, and terminal
  222. mode.

  225. while at his or her own Mac!

  230.  x Messages are word-wrapped to fit a certain column width when they are
  231. imported as echo mail or by the sysop, (wraped to fit 80 columns)
  232. and when messages are "quoted" (wapped to fit 60 columns).

  234.  x First stage of Remote SysOp functions is complete:  A sysop can edit
  235. users remotely.  (YOU NEED TO INCLUDE THE "SYSOP MENU" FILE IN FBBS FILES!)

  238. access this menu enter a * at the Main Menu, followed by a carriage
  239. return.

  265. check the 300 baud in the modem settings dialog, any user logging at
  266. 300 baud will be rejected).  This works for ANY speed your modem

  270. another category by choosing from a "popup" menu in the Custom Strings
  271. dialog.
